SLOKA FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST 2014

"Yathra The sukruthaathmano Viharanthi Maharshayaha
Thathpunyam Shabari Sthaanam Jagaama Aathmasamaadhina"

Every man in this world desires peace of mind. WE have to be at peace whether we face sorrow or happiness, loss or gain, praise or criticism. One can attain this peace only through the grace of a guru. Sabari was an ordinary woman. She sought refuge under Sage Mathanga. He inturn preached her the Rama Nama. She attained liberation in the very presence of Sri Rama.

When sage Mathanga was to leave to Brahmaloka he did the upadesha of Rama Nama to Sabari. Sabari was expecting Rama since then. Everyday she went to the banks of Pampa, fetched sweet fruits and eagerly awaited his arrival. Thus 12 years passed in eager expectation. Now Rama had lost his beloved Sita and was in search of her. He looked for Sabari and came to her ashram along with Lakshmana. Wearing matted hair and the bark of a tree on his waist, tears in his eyes, Kodanda in his hand, a tall figure, dark complexioned and with a broad chest Rama looked completely stunning. Sabari welcomed Him into her ashram. He asked her “ Does you penance go on unobstructed? Have you conquered your anger? Do you eat balanced Satvic food? Does your gurukainkarya bear fruit?. Sabari said happily “ My tapas is fulfilled because of your darshan. My Janma ( this birth) is now fruitful. I have brought theses fruits for your sake from the banks of Pampa. Please accept them. Rama accepted them. Sabari then showed the ashram precincts to them. She then sat in Padmasana before Rama, burnt her body through her Yogaagni and attained liberation in a celestial form.

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST 2014

                                                      THIRUPAVAZHAVANNAN
There was a huge fight between the Devas and the asuras. Devas conquered the asuras. The asuras were badly hurt. Some of them lost their parts of the body. Some of them lost their lives and some others were badly injured. They all sought refuge under Lord Shiva. Shiva called Sukracharya, the preceptor of the Devas in secrecy and told him thus “ in this mount Kailas there are herbs called MruthaSanjeevani, Vishalyakarani,, Santhanakarani etc. If you mix all these and make a medicine out of it , it would help to join the broken limbs and make the body as before. It can also restore life. This life giving medicine is not known by anyone else” Sukracharya was very happy and did as instructed. The asuras were restored to life. They again fought a big battle, this time with more strength. The Devas were surprised to see that all those whom they had killed before were now fighting with them. This time the Devas were badly hurt. They sought refuge under the twin doctors- Ashwinikumaras. The latter could not find a proper medicine to cure them and hence surrendered at the feet of Lord Vishnu. Vishnu came in the form of Dhanvanthari,  bearing his conch, discus, amruthakalasha and leech. He threw his dicus and created a new therrtha called Chakratheertha. He filled the pond with his nectar that could cure all kinds of diseases. The Ashwinikumaras were filled with gratitude and established two deities called Pachaivannan, Pavazhavannan. Those who worship these deities will be restored with their full health and handicapped persons too would benefit greatly.
Note: This kshetra is in Kanchipuram.
