KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH -DEC 2015

                                                            THIRUCHENKUNDRUR
Jagajjyothi vimanam, thiruchchitraru, seen by Lord Siva
At the banks of Sanga theertham lord Hari stands at Sonashailapuram ( thiruchenkundrur). Once upon a time there was a powerful asura by name Andhaka. He performed severe penance. Brahma bestowed on him a boon that he will not be killed by any weapon of the Devas. “ Indra’s vajrayudham, or Yama’s dandam, or Varuna’s pasam or Vayu’s gada,, Rudra’s parasu or Vishnu’s chakra, or Muruga’s vel ( trident) will not hurt you” said Brahma. But as he was of a vicious nature he began assaulting all the Devas. The Devas sought refuge under Lord Siva. As Siva fought a tough battle Andhaka disappeared from His sight. Even Lord Siva’s parasu failed to succeed.  Siva came down to Malayadesham at the banks of sanga teertha and performed penance. The Lord appeared along with Durga, lakshmi and saraswathi. The Lord said ‘” Previously I took the avathar of Hayagriva and killed the asuras who took away the Vedas. I shall now give to you the same shoola which I used in that battle.” It was at that time that a girl who was the amsha of Lakshmi was born to a sage called Aprunar. She was named Sarawathi and wanted to wed me. In the Hayagrivaathar I married her. Andhakasura is Tamas embodied. Only the shoola which is wisdom personified can kill him. Brahmavidyaswarupini Durga killed Mahishasuran with this same weapon.” Having said thus the Lord ordered sarawathi and Durga to give the shoolam to Siva. Lord Siva inturn waged a war and killed Andhakasura.

Thus this kshetra has the deities of Siva, Durga, Vishnu( Hayagriva and Saraswathi. Those who worship them at this ksehtra will beget longevity, health and success.

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2015

                                                               THIRUTHEVANARTHOGAI

Once there was a huge assembly of all the Devas. Brahma, Rudra, Indra, Vayu, Agni, Yama, Ashwinikumaras, Vishwedevas,, Maruths etc met and discussed an important matter.
How do we see the Lord who is inaccessible to even Yogis. We are all Aathikaarikapurushas, who work as per the Lord’s instructions. Still the Lord is so inaccessible to even all of us. We are unable to go to Paramapada. Only the Nithyasuris are able to worship him there. We can go to Ksheerabdi, yet His Darshan cannot be guaranteed. Yogis see Him as Antharyami in their heart. WE are unable to do so. Even monkeys and shepherds got His Darshan. But that is possible only during His Vibhava Avatharas like Rama and Krishna. We became Devas after performing very many great deeds for many janmas. Yet what is the use if we cannot see the Lord? What is the way out. Please tell us Brahmaji, requested the Devas.
Brahma replied “ I begot the Brahmapatta after 1000crore yugas. The Darshan of the Lord is very difficult even for me. He is not visible to those who perform deeds with desires. He gives His Darshan only for those premabhakthas. We did not worship Him with Love but did so with selfish motives. If we can worship Him with true Love He will bless us all with His Darshan.
Lord Shiva said “ Hari is all pervading. Why cant you all perceive Him thus.” Indra said “ We want to see Him with a form and Name. Varuna said “ If that is the case we should give up all our desires and mediatate upon Him.  Ashwinikumaras said “ He is inaccessible to those who fall into maya, faithless, those who have fallen from the path of yoga. Each of them gave their own suggestion and they came to a conclusion that the Lord who come only if they worshipped Him with true Love.

Immediately the Lord manifested His Magnificient form with His divine conch and shell. He said “ You all have attained Swarga. You have nectar. Still you are not free from troubles.. The Devas said “ Oh Lord We have realised that your Darshan alone can free us from all miseries. We want to see you always. If we, even Devas are full of worry what about the ordinary mortals. Hence we request you to to stay here in this kshetra and give your Darshan to all men and DEvas.
Hence the kshetra came to be called ThiruDevanarthogai. Those who worship here will be freed from material desires.

SLOKA FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2015

Thatho Ravananeethayaha Seethayaha Shathrukarshanaha
Iyesha padamanveshtum chaaranacharithe pathi
Everyone in this world aims at peace. But none knows the way to it. Those who have attained knowledge of the soul attain peace. That is attained again only by the grace of guru. The jeevan is immersed in samsaara by the ties of maya. He becomes subdued by the satva, rajas and tamao gunas. The jeeva wants liberation and the Lord to wants to free him. It is then that the Lord sends a Guru. The Guru consoles the jeevan, preaches the rama nama and unites him with the Lord. This is the crux of Ramayana. This is exemplified in Sundara kanda.
In Sundara Kanda Hanuman is the Guru. Sri Rama is Eeshwara. Seetha is the jeevan. Ravana exemplifies Rajo guna, Kumbakarna is the embodiment of tamas and Vibheeshana shows the satva guna. Maricha personifies Maya. Seetha was abducted by Ravana because of her desire for the deer ( maya). She was taken away from Rama ( Lord) and arrested in Ashokavana. This is nothing but the jeevan being subdued in samsara by the maya. It is then that Aanjaneya unites Seetha and Rama being an aacharya.

Hanuman rose up the Mahendra mountains. He grew and grew in form. His devotees might fear that Hanuman was flying to Lanka single handed without any other support. Valmiki knew the fear. Hence He says “ This Hanuman alone would suffice to destroy the entire Lanka—Seethayaha Shatrukarshanaha.” He could fly across the skies. He could also swim across the sea. But he chose to fly across as he would reach Lanka speedily.

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2015

                                                                              THIRUMOOZHIKKALAM

The Devas were tormented by the asuras. The Devas decided to come over to Thirumoozhikkalam and surrender to the Lord.  They prayed to the Lord at the banks of the pond at Thirumoozhikkalam. “ Oh Lord. You are the only refuge to the needy, helpless and poor. The Asuras are dsperte to establish adharma (unrighteousness) while we are working to establish dharma. It is you who should save us all and re-establish dharma by attacking the asuras indirectly”.
The Lord, pleased by their devotion appeared on Garuda and spoke to them thus:
“ I shall now tell you all an idea to win the asuras. May you all beseech the help of Puranjayan, a king of the Suryavamsha who is known for his valour and efficiency.  I shall enter into him and through him kill the asuras. Let Indra be a bull on whom I shall mount and battle against the asuras. The rest of the devas may assume the form of brahmanas and request  Puranjayan to declare war.”
The devas did as instructed by the Lord. The King with the aavesha ( entry) of the Lord mounted a bull, attacked the asuras and won the battle. Kakuth means- The bull’s mound. As the king sat on the bull’s mound he came to be called kakuthstha.
( Lord Rama came as a descendent and hence He came to be called Kaakuthstha.)

Thirumoozhikkalam was established by that king. He brought 1000 brahmanas to this place and made them do the Veda Parayana, recite Ithihasas and Puranas. Those who worship the Lord at this kshetra will beget success and success alone.

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2015

                                    KADAMBAVANAM- UTHTHAMARKOVIL
There is a kshetra called Kadambavana ( uththamar kovil). It is to the north of Srirangam. There was a sage by name Kadamba rishi who did Cauvery snanam at the banks and did severe penance. He was engaged in Ashtaksshara japam. Once many sages came to the ashrama of Kadambamuni. Those sages included Athri, Chyavanar, vasishta, markandeya, Brugu, Marichi, Kashyapar, Kanvar, Yagnavalkyar,z, narada, Vishwamithra, Gowthamar, Daththathreya, Sukar, Parasara etc. They were engaged in the discussion of the parathathva. Kadamba muni addressed this august gathering “ may you all research the Vedas, smruthis, shastras and come to a conclusion regarding the parabruhma.
Brahma said “ since the Vedas sing sukthas on all Devathas like Indra, Yama, Vishnu, Siva it is difficult to come to a conclusion regarding the nature of Parathathva.
Yagnavalkya said “ The Lord is one. The devathas are but angas ( parts) of this one Lord. He is formless and nameless. He is immortal . Hence he is aksharaswarupa.
Vyasa said” The Vedas definitely extol narayana as the supreme Being. Other Devas are but forms of this Narayana.
Markandeya says ‘ I doubt it. I feel the mumoorthy ( Bruhma, Vishnu and Siva) are all parathathvas.
Brugu says “ Creation, sustenance and destruction are carried out by one and the same Lord . The Vedas talk of the creation of Bruhma. Shathapadabrahmanam talks of creation of Siva. But there is no creation of Vishnu being spoken about. Hence He is the primordial energy.
Athri says “ Why waste our time over arguments ? Lets do penance here  wishing to see the Lord who is the source of all.
All of them thus sat for penance along with Kadamba muni. The Lord appeared along with Bruhma and Siva.
Kadamba Muni says “ Oh Lords, please tell me who is the Best ( uththaman) among the three of you and please tell me your specialities. Then Bruhma and Siva extolled the transcendental qualities of the Lord and Narayana too spoke high of Brahma and Siva. Narayana said ‘ Those who differentiate between us and think low of any one of us is indeed a lowly person. I reside in the heart of Siva and Bruhma. Even the devathas get high posts only because of Brahma’s mercy. Siva on the other hand is the controller of mruthyu ( death) and has conqured th inconquerable Kama ( lust). Thus all of them have their own specialities. Brahma then said “ Of course yes. But I, Brahma have been born out of His nabhi and Siva , out of my mukha. But Vishnu does not have an origin. He is the moola vasthu and giver of moksha. Hence He is Purushothama.”

Thus it was concluded that Vishnu is Purushothathama, the Uthama of all. Those who worship Him in Karambanur beget moksha.

SLOKA FOR THE MONTH OF AUG 2015

" Budhirbalam Yasho Dhairyam Nirbhayathvam Arogatha
Ajaadyam Vaakpatuthvam cha Hanumathsmaranaathbhaveth"

The very thought of Hanuman will bestows us with intelligence, strength, courage, health, fearlessness, eloquence of speech. Hanuman was a very intelligent person. He knew all sastras.  He learnt sastras from the Sun God. He was endowed with strength. Some have wisdom but are weaklings. Some have strength but are not wise. Though some have both intelligence and strength it does not benefit the society at large. Both should be of use to a dharmaathma, for the sake of righteousness. Hanumans strength and wisdom was of great use to Sri Rama.  When Hanuman crossed the ocean a naagamatha by name Surasa wanted to test his prowess.  She wanted to swallow him up. He grew monstrous in size for 100 yojanas.  Surasa also grew in size. But hanuman immediately shrank himself and entered her mouth, came back swiftly. This leela shows his strength when he grew in size. When he shrank his size it manifests his presence of mind.
Hanuman is a famous figure. He even threatened Ravana at his sabha. He advised Ravana. He did not fear even when his tail was lit on fire. He did not pray to Rama to save him. He lit Lanka instead. All these shows his fearlessness.
He was very strong because of his staunch brahmacharyam. He had good health because of celebacy. He brought the Oshadiparvatha and bestowed all the warriors with new life.
He also talked sweetly. Sri Rama Himself appreciated his meaningful words. There are no words to describe Hanuman's glory.

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH- AUGUST 2015

                                                           PARTHANPALLI
Arjuna and the rest of the Pandavas were on exile. They had decided to do a theertha yatra. As they were wandering through the dakshina desha ( the southern parts), they reached a forest. Arjuna was afflicted with a great thirst. He looked for water here and there but ther wasn’t even an ounce of it. He desperately wandered in search of water but in vain. Agitated and exhasperated Arjuna sat under a tree along with his family. Just then a small boy dressed in a beautiful shirt and wearing a turban reached the spot. He had a stick in his hand. He spoke to Arjuna “ Iam a cowherd. How may I help you Sire? Arjuna was pleased by his looks. He introduced himself as one of the pandavas and told him he was feeling really thirsty. Follow me, said the little boy. At a particular place with his stick he hit the ground and up sprang clear water. Arjuna was greatly surprised. He drank the waters and took a fresh bath. He the looked for the boy who had by then vanished. Arjuna was now frantically looking out for the boy. Nowhere was he found. Tired, he slept under a tree. In his dream he saw the same boy who spoke to him “ Iam none other than Dwarakadeesha. Dont you worry . You are my friend and Iam your friend.” Arjuna woke up in excitement and continued to search for that little boy. He then came across a beautiful temple. He worshipped the Lord there. That pond which was created by the stick of the Lord came to be called VethraGanga ( Vethra refers to a stick). Those who take bath in Vethra Ganga get rid of their sins. Since then this kshetra is reffered to as ParthanPalli.
